This work was created for my series" to be encountered". It combines textiles and painting and uses size to examine Toronto’s ravine system and urban wildlife as a liminal space. Using animals as ecological indicators, works consider how frequency of encounter often replaces ecological importance.
to be encountered treats visibility itself as an ecological force...what is seen often is taken for granted and what is rarely encountered is overlooked. Species commonly seen within the ravines are rendered at a smaller scale, interrupting their familiarity, while animals rarely encountered appear in more intricate works.
Works are created with gouache on watercolour and handmade mulberry bark paper, alongside embroidered and beaded paintings on raw canvas. Created during my artist residency at the historic Gladstone House, the series reflects on the distribution of attention in urban environments. By asking viewers to slow down and reconsider what they habitually overlook, to be encountered reflects on how survival and value are shaped by both ecological systems around us and human habits of seeing.
